Delivering a portfolio of capital construction projects can be a difficult endeavor. Construction projects include diverse internal and external resources sharing information across multiple locations to coordinate a complex set of activities. Collaborative platforms provided by integrated enterprise project management systems can facilitate sharing this information across the network of stakeholders, vendors, and project team members. These systems allow organizations to realize benefits across two areas—cost management and operational efficiency. More robust cost management is enabled by tracking early change order activity as a leading indicator of project cost performance, as well as identifying latent capital that can be returned to the business for use on other projects. Operational efficiencies are highlighted by trends in project managers managing more work, increased contractual compliance, and reduction of duplicated work. On-time delivery of projects has not improved, however. The collaborative, open methods used to enable cost and project management processes may offer lessons to improve schedule management and timely delivery of projects.
